Management at An Post have circulated a letter to all staff, which outlines the serious difficulties the company faces.
In the letter, Chief Executive John Hynes outlines projected losses this year in excess of €30 million.
He also says that major changes will be carried out across all sections of the company - with job losses in all areas.
He warns that any slippage in implementing the strategic plan will result in An Post running out of cash next year.
