The value of retail sales rose by 5.4% in November 2001 compared to the same month in 2000, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office on Friday. However, if motor trades are excluded the annual increase is 7.7%.
The November 2001 index was 0.7% higher in October 2001, the CSO added.
The volume of retail sales was up 3.5% in November 2001 compared to November 2000. If motor trades are excluded the annual increase in volume in 3.7%.
The CSO also revised downwards the provisional month-on-month figure for October to show value up 2.2%, down from 2.4%. This gives a year on year rate of 5.3%, down from a provisional 5.6%.
Annual sales growth has fallen back from a 16.2% peak in December 1999 as the effects of the worldwide economic slowdown impacts on the economy here.
