US economy showing signs of recovery

The US economy is showing some signs of recovery from its negative trend, US Federal Reserve Board Vice Chairman Roger Ferguson indicated last night.

'There are some positive elements and some negative elements and I think earlier, towards the end of last year, the information was more heavily negative,' he told journalists during a stopover in Geneva.

Ferguson remained cautious and declined to pin down the exact form of a recovery, but said data had shifted 'from negative to more mixed'.

But he said the relative stregth of consumer confidence and some data on global goods shipments gave grounds for a more positive outlook.
