Argentine Cabinet, minus Cavallo, to stay

Argentine President Fernando de la Rua has refused all the resignations of his Cabinet members except that of Economy Minister Domingo Cavallo as riots envelop the recession-hit country, according to a government official.

The entire cabinet had offered to resign after widespread protests raged throughout Argentina, killing 16, as public anger boiled over the government's inability to end a brutal recession now in its fourth year.

But De la Rua only accepted the departure of Cavallo, which was demanded by many of the thousands of protesters thronging the city centre today.

Cavallo is unpopular for austerity measures and cash controls aimed at avoiding a run on the banks and what could be the biggest debt default in history.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund has offered no specific new aid to help Argentina cope with its deepening economic and social crisis but said it was prepared to work with the government's new economic team.
