Air passenger traffic on international scheduled flights fell by 17% in September from a year ago as a result of the terror attacks in the US, according to the International Air Transport Association.
The monthly drop registered by IATA's 274 member airlines is the biggest since a plunge immediately after the Gulf War in 1991. Freight traffic also declined by 9%.
For the first nine months of the year, passenger traffic on international scheduled services showed no growth, while total traffic, including freight, fell nearly 3%, the organisation said.
Carriers registered in North America were most seriously affected, where passenger and freight traffic fell more than 30% in September.
