Annual inflation unchanged in September

The annual inflation rate in September was unchanged from the August figure at 4.6%, according to the Central Statistics Office. Prices rose by 0.4% in the month after a 0.3% increase in August.

The CSO says clothing and footwear prices continued to rise after the end of the summer sales, while the cost of medical insurance and the increase in the television licence fee also fed into the figures.

Transport and fuel costs fell, however, while hotel and guest accommodation charges were also lower.

The EU's harmonised index of consumer prices was up 0.3% in the month, giving an annual rate of 3.8%, compared with 3.7% in August.

* Central Statistics Office figures show that the seasonally adjusted volume of industrial production for the three months to the end of August fell by 6.5% on the previous three months. The annual increase for the year to August was 0.1%.
