Aer Lingus cuts fares to boost travel

Aer Lingus has announced a new range of lower fares to try to encourage people to fly following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.

The offers include fares at £59 return including taxes to London, and £49 return to Manchester and Edinburgh. Return flights to New York are offered at £169, Los Angeles for £249, and Paris for £98.

The fares can be booked from 7.30am tomorrow and are available for travel until November 30. The fares are for midweek travel and the company says supplements will apply for weekend rates.

The announcement comes prior to a meeting of the Aer Lingus board tomorrow where a rescue plan for the troubled airline will be discussed. This is expected to propose laying off 2,500 permanent staff.

An Aer Lingus spokesman said the fares would encourage the travelling public to fly again, and provide a reason for tourists to visit Ireland from the 26 destinations covered by the Aer Lingus network.

* Ryanair also announced a major seat sale today. The low fares airline is offering a return fare of £29.99 (including all taxes) to all destinations in Britain as well as to Paris and Brussels on all midweek flights.

One million seats are on offer, the airline says, with travel allowed until May 26 2002.
