EasyJet passenger numbers up 27% in September

Europe's second-biggest discount airline, easyJet, showed today how demand for its flights had remained strong despite the impact of the US terrorist crisis.

The budget operator, which is based in London's Luton airport, flew 680,383 passengers during September - 27% higher than a year earlier but only slightly down on the previous month.

Its load factor, which measures the number of passengers on the seats of its aircraft, was 83.16%, slightly higher than the 83.03% for the same month last year.

EasyJet's figures reflect comments last week that its focus on Europe and cheaper fares would help it overcome the crisis facing the airline industry. While bookings fell by 26% on the morning after the terrorist attacks, sales have since recovered to more normal levels, it said last week.

Rival operators, including Ryanair and Buzz, have also reported that business has remained strong.

The latest figures from easyJet today also show that more people are using the Internet to book tickets. Online sales reached 91% in September compared with 77.8% a year earlier and 88.5% in August.
