A US based medical devices company has announced that it is to create 185 jobs over five years at a new plant in Oranmore in Co Galway. Star Guide of Denver is to establish its European manufacturing base in the village in an investment worth almost four million euro.
Speaking in Oranmore today, Tanaiste and Enterprise Minister Mary Harney said 13 of the world's top 20 medical device manufacturing companies have now established subsidiaries in Ireland.
She said the Oranmore plant is a further significant development in an industry which now employs over 16,000 people here in 80 companies.
The company will mainly be recruiting staff with Leaving Cert qualifications. About 15% of the jobs will be for third level graduates.
Star Guide is a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania based UTI Corporation which employs 1,100 at nine locations in the US and Europe. It supplies many of the world's leading minimally invasive medical device manufacturers such as Boston Scientific, Guidant and Medtronic.
