Leading UK airports group, BAA, said it handled 10.6 million passengers in May - a fall of 1%.
The company said this was compared with a very strong figure recorded last May, and the figure was recorded despite the continued impact of the foot and mouth disease crisis.
BAA forecast a gradual return to normal levels of around four to five per cent growth by the Autumn.
