Carphone Warehouse Irish profits double

Mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse says its Irish profits more than doubled to IR£1.9m in the year to the end of March. Turnover also surged from £12.5m to £28.1m.

11 new stores were opened during the year, while total new connections grew to 178,500.

Pre-tax profits at the parent company, which floated last July, rose by 62% to £49.6m sterling before amortisation and exceptional items.

* Former Irish managing director Stephen Mackarel has been appointed European Zone manager at the company, and has been replaced by Mervyn O'Callaghan.
