Prudential pulls out of US merger deal

British insurance group Prudential has pulled out of a planned merger with US insurer American General after a higher bid from American International Group, the world's largest insurer.

Prudential said that in return for scrapping the deal, American General had paid a termination fee of $600m.

Media reports say AIG's purchase of American General for $23bn in stock could be announced later today. Prudential had bid $21bn in March.
