Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy has published a Bill allowing for the replacement of IR£ amounts set down in law with convenient amounts in euros from January 1 2002.
The Euro Changeover (Amounts) Bill covers fees or charges levied by Government bodies, and thresholds where amounts may be paid in cash. The Department of Finance says the amounts affected will be rounded up or down so as to favour the citizen.
Fees or charges will be reduced to the nearest convenient euro amounts below the exact equivalent of the current IR£ amounts. Thresholds will be increased to the nearest euro amounts above the exact equivalent.
The Bill published today does not deal with the tax or social welfare codes, which will be dealt with separately in legislation from the relevant departments.
