New figures 'signal slowdown, but not recession'

The index of leading economic indicators - a gauge of US economic activity six to nine months in the future - fell 0.6% in December, the third straight monthly decline.

Business research group the Conference Board said the report signalled a marked economic slowdown but not a looming recession.

Conference Board economist Ken Goldstein said the cumulative decline was 3.2%, below what could be considered a recessionary signal.
