Tesco's UK Christmas sales figures beat expectations

British food retail giant Tesco has announced strong sales growth over the Christmas period.

The supermarket group said UK like-for-like sales in stores open more than a year were up 6.9% over the seven weeks ending January 6, beating analysts expectations of 4% to 5%.

Tesco also said international sales were up 50% over the Christmas and New Year period, boosted by the opening of 32 new stores during the year.

Sales on its web site tesco.com were up 400% on last year, and the company said it had recruited 400 new staff to meet the demand.
