Strong Tesco Sales Rise Offsets Petrol Problems

Britain's largest food retailer Tesco has reported a strong rise in sales, with business in the 14 weeks ending November 18 up 12.7%, helped by a continued strong core UK performance.

The company, in its third quarter trading statement, said UK like-for-like sales for the same period rose 5.1%, driven by strong sales volumes.

Tesco said the sales performance helped offset the effects of the petrol supply disruption.

It also noted accelerated growth in Central Europe and Asia. After opening 29 hypemarkets this year, total international sales grew 49% in the quarter.
