Shares in UK bank Alliance and Leicester surged 10% this morning on the back of Sunday newspaper reports of a possible takeover by National Australia Bank.
The Independent on Sunday said NAB was believed to be planning a £4 billion sterling merger with Alliance and Leicester, the UK's sixth largest mortgage bank.
Alliance and Leicester has previously been involved in merger talks with Bank of Ireland, but the deal fell through after disputes about the future manangement structure.
