British bank Alliance & Leicester, whose merger talks with Bank of Ireland collapsed last year, is to axe up to 1,500 staff over the next three years in an effort to cut costs.
The bank said it aimed to cut yearly costs by £100m by the end of 2003 by running the bank better and by web-enabling the business.
Alliance & Leicester added it expected to achieve the majority of the staff cuts through a combination of natural staff turnover and redeployment and re-training.
