On tonight's Tracks and Trails, scientist and author Luke O'Neill and presenter Doireann Ní Ghlacáin go on a stunning coastal journey from the Victorian splendour of Dún Laoghaire Pier along the shoreline to the charming village of Dalkey and beyond to Dalkey Island.
This walk takes in some of South Dublin's most iconic coastal scenery, the famous piers, the rocky foreshore at Sandycove, the Forty Foot bathing place, and the beautiful village of Dalkey with its castle, restaurants, and views out to the island.
Distance: 4km
Starting Point: Dún Laoghaire East Pier, Co. Dublin
End Point: Coliemore Harbour, Dalkey (for Dalkey Island ferry)
Terrain: Promenade, coastal paths, village streets
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Best for: All levels, coastal views, history, families, a great day out from Dublin

Trail Tips:
Navigation: The coastal path from Dún Laoghaire to Dalkey is easy to follow, hugging the shoreline south.
Dalkey Island: Dalkey Island is accessible by small ferries from Coliemore Harbour (seasonal). Check local operators for schedules and fares; it is well worth the short crossing.
What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes or trainers are fine for this coastal walk. Bring a waterproof layer as it can be breezy on the seafront. Water and snacks are recommended.
After Your Walk: Dalkey village has an excellent selection of cafés, restaurants, and pubs. The village itself is well worth exploring on foot.
Getting There: Dún Laoghaire is easily reached by DART from Dublin city centre. Car parking is also available.
About Dalkey Island:
Dalkey Island lies just 300 metres off the coast and is home to an early Christian oratory dedicated to St Begnet (OPW) and a Martello tower built during the Napoleonic era. The island is now uninhabited by humans and is a designated Special Area of Conservation.
