Founded in 1888 as a scholarly journal, National Geographic is an American publisher that explores the globe across the areas of geography, history, nature, science, world culture and, of course, travel.

Earlier this year, the site turned its eye to Ireland, with writer Jillian Dara claiming that The Liberties has become so trendy that people are supposedly referring to it as the 'Brooklyn of Dublin'.

Although the 'locals' comparing the Dublin 8 neighbourhood to the New York City borough are left unsourced, there does seem to be an argument to be made.

Guinness Storehouse

The Liberties may not have the Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island amusement park, or world-famous pizza to its name, but it undoubtedly has a growing art scene, trendy venues, and a buzzy nightlife.

As well as being home to the world-famous Guinness Storehouse, Dara notes that the area has witnessed a "modern revival", with artist studios, crafts shops, café and distilleries popping up within some of the city's most beautiful old buildings.

The writer claims that the "foundation of free spirit and resilience" has lent itself to creative types feeling at home in the area, seamlessly merging the old with the new.

On the one hand, you have Dublin's Antique Quarter on Francis Street, while on the other, La Catedral Studios has transformed a former Victorian clothing factory into a home base for over 40 artists.

In terms of things to do, Dara lists a variety of activities ranging from enjoying the traditional Irish musicians who play at Dudley's to checking out the Irish print art on display at Jam Art Factory.

Not to mention the "rich collection of preserved cultural attractions," including St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Marsh’s Library.

For a bite to eat and something to drink, she recommends Two Pups, At Bite of Life, Notions Bistro and Natural Wine Bar, Hen's Teeth, Lucky's, The Fumbally, Arthur's Pub, Fallon's, The Brazen Head, the Lord Edward, and Variety Jones.

Perhaps we should be calling Brooklyn, The Liberties of New York...
