Christmas hasn't even arrived yet and already the menacing hum of "new year new me" has begun across all forms of media, urging us all to feel guilty for enjoying the festive season. We need something, anything, to rescue us from the January Blues that are heading our way.
Might I suggest a trip?! I know money can be tight after Christmas, but winter breaks don’t have to break the bank. It doesn't have to be abroad, it doesn’t even have to be overnight; a good day trip can breathe life back into you as much as a weekend escape.
Day Trips
Reconnect with nature in Laois
Dust the cobwebs off with a hike to the Glenbarrow waterfall or into the heart of the Slieve Blooms. After your hike, immerse yourself in a hot tub in the woods at Barrow sauna and listen to the birdsong. Grab lunch or coffee next door in The Falls coffee shop and maybe even go for a dip at Cathole Falls before heading home. This area of Laois is just over an hour from Dublin.
A UK day trip
I have a friend who takes herself on day trips to London a few times a year to see exhibits or shows. She catches the earliest flight out and can be home for dinner. I’ve always thought it was iconic behaviour.
So if you need a break but don’t want the expense of a hotel, hop a cheap Ryanair flight to London, Liverpool or maybe Edinburgh - wherever takes your fancy! All you need is your purse and your passport. It won’t break the bank, and exploring a new city will give you a buzz of energy that we all desperately need in January.
Have a self-care day in Dublin city
Urban saunas and spas have popped up everywhere across Ireland, so why not book a day or even just an hour and forget about all the stress of the festive season? Align Wellness in Harold’s Cross is a luxury sauna, ice bath and breath work studio. It was created by Katie Donovan after she realised the profound effect that stress was having on her own body. Membership options are available for 2026, or you can pay as you go.
Irish Escapes
Cosy cabin vibes in Kerry
The new estate cabins at Ballygarry Estate are perfect for a couple's getaway or a solo break. I spent two nights there by myself, and it was the perfect reset for when I was feeling overwhelmed. You get access to the thermal suite at the Nádúr Spa during your stay, which has gorgeous views across the Slieve Mish mountains. The onsite restaurant, The Brasserie, serves an incredible sticky toffee pudding as well if you have a sweet tooth.
A Derry city break
There’s something about Derry, the city and the people, that lifts the spirits. There’s always a festival or celebration of some sort going on. Get active with Far and Wild on their cycling food tour. Walk the city walls and check out the famous Bogside murals. I always stay at the Maldron when I visit Derry, the rooms are comfortable, the food is great, and the staff are welcoming.
Going Abroad

Epic Adventures
January is one of the quietest times to visit the theme parks in Florida. So if Universal’s new Epic Universe is on your bucket list, January could be the perfect time to visit and avoid the long queues. What better way to banish any seasonal sadness than the serotonin boost of getting to pet Toothless the dragon or the adrenaline rush of playing real-life Mario Kart?!
Beach break
More of a beach holiday person? The Algarve has been named the world’s leading beach destination for a fourth time at the World Travel Awards. With its mild winters, where temperatures reach up to 18C, it’s the perfect spot for some winter sun that won’t break the bank. Ryanair flies into Faro airport year-round. From there, head to Lagos or Albufeira for affordable accommodation, great food and plenty of sandy beaches.
An unusual city break
Chester was recently named the UK’s most welcoming city by booking.com. It is a stunning city known for its Tudor-style buildings, Roman history and world-famous zoo. Fly into Manchester and catch a direct train to Chester city. Stay at The Queen hotel across from the train station for old-world luxury.
Wander the old Roman walls, stop into the Chester cheese shop to try some crumbly Cheshire (one of the oldest recorded cheeses in British history), or visit the 1st century Roman amphitheater. This historic city feels like a well-kept secret and makes for a more relaxing break than the typical major UK cities.

So, if the January blues are looming, don’t worry, a quick change of scenery may be all you need to feel like yourself again. Whether it’s a day, a night or a weekend, never underestimate the power of change and travel to invigorate the spirit.
