Martin Crummy explores The Spencer Hotel in the heart of Dublin City with his wife and two daughters.
In the heart of the city, there is a hotel that ticks many boxes for a family wanting to experience Dublin's vibrant atmosphere while having a quiet haven to retreat to after a day of exploration.
Strategically positioned on the banks of the River Liffey, this hotel provides unparalleled access to Dublin's most iconic attractions. Located just a 2-minute walk from the red Luas line and a short journey to the main transport hub of Connolly Station, the Spencer Hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the city.
We, a family of four—two kids aged 6 and 10—took the DART into Connolly Station. While the Luas was an option, we opted to walk the 10 minutes to the hotel to check in. It is so convenient for everything; people were staying at the hotel while we were there who were heading into the city for parties and others attending a concert at the 3Arena.
Despite this central location our stay was very quiet and peaceful and the area really was a quiet haven just steps away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Check-in was a seamless experience, with Lilian at the front desk explaining everything. The family room we stayed in was honestly the best laid out we've ever experienced. At the front of the suite were two single beds for the kids, and at the back was a master bed with a bathroom behind the girls' room, linking everything together. This arrangement allowed the kids to be close without sharing the same room for the night's sleep. It was a really good combination and one of the best family rooms we have ever stayed in.
The Spencer Health Club is definitely worth a visit during your stay. Featuring an 18-meter heated indoor swimming pool, a fully equipped gymnasium, and the Viola Day Spa, it provides a comprehensive range of treatment options for guests looking to rejuvenate and relax. The kids were obsessed with the pool, which has a good balance of 'open swimming' and dedicated lanes, so they weren't bothering anyone during their swim. The team at reception was also very accommodating, offering extra time to swim on Sunday before or after check-out.
For dinner, we decided to dine in the hotel restaurant (which turned out to be a great choice!). Due to the hotel's excellent location, there are multiple dining options nearby. We dined on a Friday night, and there was a vibrant atmosphere in both the bar and 'East Restaurant,' complete with a live DJ and a lively crowd ready to enjoy the weekend.
The restaurant offers an interesting Asian fusion menu for lunch and dinner. We had dinner there and were not disappointed; our picky eater (the 6-year-old) was very well catered for. We were particularly impressed with the kids' menu—especially the Spencer Bento Special, which allows you to choose from several main options including plain breast of chicken, chicken goujons, stir-fried vegetables, or tofu, accompanied by a side of baby potatoes, chips, or rice. This meal also includes fresh fruit, vegetables, and a dipping sauce, priced at €13.50.
