Adare Manor and Ashford Castle have both tied for the top-rated Irish hotel in a new list scoring the best 1,000 hotels in the world.
The two luxury hotels are among nine Irish destinations included in the round-up published by La Liste, a French company that publishes lists of the top hotels and restaurants around the world.
Its Top 1,000 World's Best Hotels list uses a compilation of customer ratings on booking websites, as well as published reviews from travel magazines and other travel guides, and global and local media coverage, to determine its rankings, as opposed to a judging panel of experts such as 50 Best or Michelin.
The Belmond Hotel Cipriani in Venice, Italy nabbed the top spot with a score of 97.95. The luxury hotel opened in 1954 and is located on the lush Giudecca Island, surrounded by gardens and Venitian canals.
It was opened by Giuseppe Cipriani, the founder of Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy and also the creator of the bellini cocktail, and is frequently visited by A-list celebrities like George and Amal Clooney.
Adare Manor, Co Limerick and Ashford Castle, Co Mayo both topped the list of Irish hotels, nabbing a score of 92.50. Elsewhere in the list was Cashel Palace Hotel in Co Tipperary, which was scored 90.50, and Dublin's The Shelbourne Hotel, which was scored 90.00.

La Liste staff also bestow special awards to hotels that have excelled in certain areas. These awards aren't decided on visits to the destinations, but by the staff members' eye for trends.
Four hotels won awards for ethics and sustainability, including Six Senses Shaharut in Israel and Bambu Indah in Bali. An award for new arrivals where given to hotels that opened in the past year, such as Atlantis the Royal in Dubai, the Peninsula in Istanbul, Capella in Sydney and others.
