Kilmainham Gaol has been voted one of the top tourist attractions in the world, according to traveller reviews.

The announcement came as TripAdvisor revealed its top picks for hotels, attractions and more in their annual Best of the Best awards.

Each year the travel company celebrates the sites and destinations that rake up "a high volume of above-and-beyond reviews and opinions from our community over a 12-month period", they note.

"Each winner has passed our rigorous trust and safety standards. Fewer than 1% of Tripadvisor’s 8 million listings are awarded Best of the Best, signifying the highest level of excellence in travel."

Dublin's Kilmainham Gaol placed 13th on the list of 25, with the editors noting that "This bleak old jail was notorious in the 19th century for its harsh treatment of prisoners".

The gaol, opened in 1796, imprisoned thousands of men, women and children over the course of 100 years, for crimes that ranged from minor offences to playing a role in some of the country's most significant historical moments.

The exhibition features stories from the 1798 rebellion, to the 1916 Easter Rising, the Anglo-Irish War (1919-21), to the devastation of the Irish Civil War (1922-23).

The Gaol was closed in 1924 but was preserved as a national monument in the 1960s and restored to its current condition.

Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain topped the list, with the Antoni Gaudi-designed church still under construction since 1882, with works funded purely by donations. The striking church also has a crypt that has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status.

The Colosseum in Rome nabbed the second spot, which was built by the Flavian emperors in 70 C.E. as a gift to the Roman people. The amphitheatre once house gladiator fights and is located beside the equally fascinating Roman Forum.

The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, dedicated to the wartime diarist Frank, rounded out the top three. The moving exhibition allows you to experience her ordeal of hiding from the Nazis, through quotes, objects and more.
