This is the New Yorker's guide to the city…kind of.
After graduating from college, I spent a year living in NYC where I ate, drank and danced my way around the city. These are my top five food spots in Manhattan.
The Hotdog
Everyone thinks of the iconic hot dog when they think of NY but there are so many amazing places to eat, a simple cart just won't cut it!
Gray’s Papaya on the Upper West Side is well known as the place to go for New Yorkers, the place where a single dog will cost you a mere $1.35. Others have tried to replicate the flavour but don't be fooled; Papaya King and Papaya Dog pale in comparison.
The Pizza
Pizza is a serious topic in NY so don’t come to the table unless you’ve done your research! I've always had a soft spot for Katonah, others crave Artichoke Basille’s but when Bill de Blasio names the best pizza in New York, you better pay attention.
Di Fara's Pizzeria opened in Brooklyn in 1965 and regularly has a queue around the block. Each pie is handmade by owner Domenico DeMarco so if he ain’t there, the place ain’t open.
The Bagel
Finding the perfect bagel is really about going out and trying it for yourself! Some will swear by the classics like Brooklyn Bagel, Zabars and the hand-rolled beauties at Russ and Daughters but two of my favourites were vegetarian cream cheese from Broadway Gourmet and The Norweiganer at Penny House in Brooklyn.

The Burger
Shake Shack is the hands-down ultimate winner of burgers in New York. There are multiple locations around the city but Madison Square Park is by far the best with its outdoor heaters, fairy light decor and Flatiron view.
Celebrities like Taylor Swift have been spotted in line with us mere mortals for these delicious Shack Burgers. Be sure to pair your burger with crinkle cut fries and a strawberry shake.
The Cupcake
Cupcakes are a religious experience in New York. Everyone has their favourite and will argue that theirs is the best in the city. Georgetown's mint chocolate, Baked by Melissa's tray of miniature flavours, Magnolia's vanilla icing, Buttercup Bake Shop's strawberry toppings. I tried them all and although it's from out of town, Georgetown won me over every time.
