"This investment shows that real progress can be made, even in difficult times" Minister Varadkar states.

The €11.8M funding will focus on Dublin City, County and the neighbouring commuter belt for improvements  to transport interchanges, cycle paths, pedestrian crossings and footpaths.

"This Government is committed to investing in public transport and encouraging more suitable ways of travelling. The projects range in size from large-scale junction changes to small-scale pedestrain crossings, but each will make a real difference in the community" the Minister said yesterday.

110 projects will benefit from this round of funding, which will stem as far north as Fingal and Meath and as far south as Wicklow. Dublin, North and South, will receive the biggest funding, followed closely by the key commuter areas of Kildare, which will receive almost €2.5M.

The Luas will receive improves facilities, particularly at the Sandyford stop

"It's important that the Government does what it can to encourage more people to take the bus, train, Luas or bike to work, school or college and to make walking more attractive in short journeys. Thats what this investment is all about" the Minister added.

Commuters will benefit from resurfaced bus and cycle lanes in Dublin City and along key commuter roads in the Greater Dublin area

Some of the key improvements will be a phase upgrade for the Thomas St/James St QBC in the City centre as well as route resurfacing, a new cycle and walking link between UCD's Belfied campus and the nearest Dart station and a brand new transport hub in Naas.

Sandyford Luas stop will benefit from new cycle facilities and better general access, while Bray Dart station will receive €150,00 for a transport interchange design.
