Laurel and Hardy

Adrian Gebruers plays the Laurel & Hardy theme tune, Dance of the Cuckoos, for Derek Mooney.

Born in Antwerp in 1902, Staf Gerbruers was a talented musician with a penchant for choral music. At the young age of 16 he was conducting his own youth choir, by 20 he was appointed carillonneur of his own parish church.

In 1924, Bishop Robert Browne of Cloyne offered the young musician the position of Carillonneur, Organist, and Choirmaster of St Colman's Cathedral in Cobh. A position that led him to a lifelong career in Ireland and the unlikely chance to play for American icons Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.

In 1953, the actors visited Cobh as part of a promotional tour and, as the boats pulled into the harbor, Staf began to play the Laurel and Hardy theme tune, Dance of the Cuckoos

In the video above, Staf's son and fellow Carillonneur Adrian Gebruers plays the same song for RTÉ Radio's Derek Mooney on the Carillon in St Colman's Cathedral, County Cork.
