A Galway cafe has been included in a round up of the 100 best coffee shops in the world.

Coffeewerk + Press on Quay Street in Galway came in at a more than respectable no. 39 on the list published by The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops earlier this month.

It's the first iteration of such a list, and hopefuls could get in the running by submitting an application themselves or being nominated. After submissions, an expert judging panel - as well as a public vote worth 30 per cent of the final score - decided who made the final cut.

The cafes mentioned span across the globe, with spots in Malaysia, Japan, Australia, Romania, the UK and more.

However, only one Irish destination was mentioned: Coffeewerk + Press.

Writing on Instagram, the cafe team said: "So proud to be recognised for the Coffeewerk + Press experience that we offer to our community.

"To be part of the first edition as the only cafe from Ireland is a real testament to all our wonderful staff both past and present who are the heartbeat of what we do everyday.

"As I reflect over the past ten years I am truly grateful for all the special moments we get to experience because of our little home in this small vibrant city."

In the top spot, according to the judges and public vote, was Toby's Estate Coffee Roasters in Australia. The specialty roasters and cafe opened in 1997, when founder Toby Smith changed careers from law to coffee, travelling the world for research and eventually converting his mum's garage into a micro roastery.

With Australia one of the world leaders in coffee, it's not surprising that an Australian spot topped the list.

In second place was Onyx Coffee Lab in Arkansas, followed by Gota Coffee Experts in Austria.

A gala reception for the list took place at Coffee Fest in Madrid, Spain which ran from 15-17 February. The convention featured key note talks from industry experts on traceability, specialty coffee and more, and a range of masterclasses.
