A brunch staple, the humble pancake is a potentially perfect food: light and fluffy, cheap to make, and a vessel for endless combinations of sweet and savoury toppings.

While you can't go wrong with the classic lemon, butter and sugar, there is without a doubt a pancake to suit every person. That said, if you're currently battling the need for a midday sweet treat and are unable to make your own, finding a pancake in a city of sambos and wraps can be a challenge.

Here, we've rounded up our top picks of the best pancakes in Dublin so you can make the most of this Pancake Tuesday.

Alma

Widely regarded as serving some of the best pancakes in the city, Alma's is always hopping come Pancake Tuesday but that shouldn't deter you. In addition to their famous dulce de leche pancakes and savoury smokey west Corkey salmon pancakes, the team have whipped up a special: buttermilk pancakes with a red wine and blueberry compote, poached rhubarb, meringue, lemon and lime mascarpone and homemade basil syrup. Served from today until the end of the week.

Slice

This Stoneybatter mainstay is renowned for their punchy, flavour-packed dishes, and when it comes to pancakes their approach is no different. This year's selection includes caramelised apples with frothy cinnamon mascarpone and shortbread crumble, and gooey toasted marshmallow with a rich dark chocolate sauce. They also have a savoury option with cheese sauce, a fried egg and bacon crumb.

The Pepperpot Cafe

If you're craving something quick and classic when in the city centre, you can't go wrong with The Pepperpot Cafe in Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. Their crepes are light and sweet, and come with minimal fuss for the purists among us.

Póg

Always a favourite, this Pancake Tuesday is a special one for the Pog team as they celebrate their 10th anniversary. With a number of lusciously topped pancakes on offer, as well as the option to build your own, you can feel even better about choosing pancakes for lunch if indulging in the protein stack.

Andersons

Though their beloved Creperie has closed, Andersons is still welcoming legions of pancake lovers through its doors, serving up classic and elegantly plated pancakes. Expect thin but fluffy crepes served with a variety of toppings.

Le Petit Breton

This creperie on the corner has been slinging out pancakes and savoury galettes for years and is always a reliable - and filling - choice for lunch. While their sweet options are all delicious, with versions in the past featuring strawberries, basil, lemon curd and more, it's their savoury galettes that really impress. A recent addition, the tartiflette galette with potatoes, reblochon cheese, onion and lardon, is a true winner.

Eathos

Buckwheat pancakes are the name of the game at this wholesome cafe, with a stack of two coming with vanilla mascarpone, mango honeycomb, strawberries and almond butter. If crepes are more your style, you can choose from Nutella with toasted coconut and seeds, streaky bacon and maple syrup or the classic lemon, butter and sugar.

Okky

For something decidedly unlike what your mammy probably made for you when you were small, head down to Okky on Aungier St, which specialises in okonomiyaki, a Japanese savoury pancake. Topped with everything from marinated udon noodles to fried eggs, these griddled cakes are a flavour explosion.

Kakilang

Level up your pancake choices with jiggly, puffy and lighter-than-air Japanese style pancakes from Kakilang. Served from 12pm to 7pm, come with a variety of toppings, from Oreo crumble to fresh fruit. These works of art take a while, however, so be prepared to wait 30 to 45 minutes depending on when you visit.

Farmer Browns

If you're looking for dizzying choice when it comes to pancakes, head down to Farmer Browns in Rathmines, where they have just launched their pancake menu. Available seven days a week, and with a 20% discount on stacks from 10am to 9pm today, you can create your own or try one of their confections, such as pecan and caramel with glazed banana.
