Michelin has added five new Irish restaurants to the UK and Ireland edition of the Michelin Guide, with two in the republic and three in Northern Ireland.

The guide is published online and updates every month, and is a curated selection of what Michelin deems as some of the best restaurants across the UK and Ireland.

The Bishop's Buttery at the Cashel Palace hotel, in Co Tipperary; Terre at Castlemartyr Resort in Co Cork; Fontana, in Holywood, Co Down; Artis by Phelim O'Hagan, in Derry and Blank, in Belfast are the newest additions to the list.

The guide's current round of inspections began in March 2022, and these five restaurants brings the total number of new Irish spots added in the past year up to 12. Twenty-four new restaurants were added to the guide overall.

The next Michelin Guide for Great Britain & Ireland will be announced at the iconic Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, on Monday 27th March, when all the new Michelin Stars, Bib Gourmands and Green Stars will be revealed.

The guide notes that both restaurants in the Republic of Ireland are located in manor houses, adding that The Bishop's Buttery celebrates "County Tipperary's produce and is found in the cellars of a house once home to Archbishops" while Terre is "a thoroughly grand and sophisticated affair located in the main house at the Castlemartyr Resort".

They highlight how "prime ingredients are also the focus at Belfast's Blank", adding that "there is no menu – everything depends on what's fresh and in season".

They continue: "Fontana in Holywood may have been around for a while but there’s a new lease of life in the kitchen, while great produce is also celebrated in Londonderry’s Craft Village area at Artis by Phelim O'Hagan."

The inclusions will ignite more speculation around which Irish restaurants may be awarded stars when the guide is published in March. Aimsir in Co. Kildare is the only two-Michelin-starred restaurant outside Dublin, while the capital city is home to three other two-Michelin-starred restaurants: Chapter One by Mickael Viljanen, Liath and Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud.
