Last week, an Irish start-up company called Rívesci (pronounced Ree-vessy) won the coveted three-star award at one of the world's most trusted food and drink awards, the Great Taste Awards, for their Cashew Chilli Crush.

In September 2019, co-founders Shannon Forrest and Michelin Star-trained Chef, Declan Malone, launched their food truck business at Clonmel's Applefest where they offered cooked-from-scratch dishes from their 1976 vintage caravan.

Sadly, when the pandemic hit Ireland in March of this year, the Tipperary pair found that running a food truck was no longer feasible. Rather than packing things in though, they decided to pivot their business to become full-time condiment makers.

Their range of condiments had already been developed but hadn't been a priority for before the pandemic. However, needs must, and co-founder Shannon Forrest says they soon became a lifeline.

"Initially, when the pandemic forced us to shut down, we were devastated," she explained, "but after a few weeks we looked at what we could do and we decided to focus on the condiments side of the business. Luckily, I had just finished the SuperValu Food Academy so we had done the brand development work and knew there was a potential retail opportunity there.".

"The win at the Great Taste Awards was a real endorsement of the brand and great boost given this is not where we saw the business going when we launched this time last year," she continued.
