Pink rum and black lava for Catherine Fulvio in Gran Canaria

Now in its third season, Tastes Like Home is back and delving ever deeper into the lives of people living abroad, tradition and the food that roots us to home.

In tonight's episode, Catherine meets sisters Nikki and Jill, who are incredibly close despite living in vastly different places. Catherine Fulvio first visits Nikki Preston-Doyle in Bray, where they cook pork fillet stuffed with prunes served with mustard mash and minty vegetables, one of her sister Jill's favourite dishes.

The team then jets off to sultry Gran Canaria where Catherine recreates this dish for Jill, bringing with her a taste of home. While here, Catherine also dishes up one of her own special treats, sticky banana date pudding with a rum caramel sauce.

As always, Catherine made time for some sightseeing, taking in the stunning landscape of Gran Canaria. One of Spain’s Canary Islands, the island lies off northwestern Africa and has a population of just 847,830. It's also known for its black lava and white sand beaches.

She sampled local produce and found that the locals share the Irish love of potatoes, saying "I particularly enjoyed their "wrinkly potatoes", a thin skinned potato, traditionally cooked in sea water which gives them their wrinkly effect." She also visited the Arehucas rum distillery.

"I found the Arehucas distillery (rum) to be very unique – not just because of the pink rum (yum!) but also because of the signed barrels – some had sketches on them by famous artists – I happened upon a pair – one signed by Tom Jones and the other by Julio Iglesias – which would have made my mother exceedingly happy had she been there!"
