Ahead of the first episode of GBBO, Miriam O’Callaghan was joined by Fionnuala Jones, a journalist with the DailyEdge.ie and Michelle Darmondy, a food writer with the Irish Examiner to discuss the phenomenon of the show - listen above.
On last night’s episode, the brand new bakers kicked off series 9 with Biscuit Week where the self-expressive aspect of baking was taken to a literal degree.
The first challenge was for the contestants to bake a ‘selfie’ cake. Ahead of the challenge, Fionnuala pointed out just how difficult these tasks are considering the level of experience of the contestants.
"These are amateur bakers and yet they always, pardon the pun, rise to the occasion when it comes to these just completely insane challenges. They have to look good and they have to be edible. They always seem to do it, it’s crazy!"

While French woman Manon was named Star Baker, Imelda - from County Tyrone - was the first baker to leave the tent.

As usual, Twitter captured all the best bits of the show from Noel Fielding's quirky shirts to some unusual show stoppers...
if you think I’m gunna spend the next 8 weeks getting emotionally invested in this group of strangers then you’d be absolutely correct #GBBO
