It's World Egg Day! Let's Get Crackin'!

It's World Egg Day!
It's World Egg Day!

You can't have a full Irish without an egg; whether they're fried, scrambled, poached or boiled, eggs are an essential part of the Irish breakfast experience. However, despite our enthusiasm, we as a nation are no egg-sperts.

According to Golden Irish, nearly 90% of us eat eggs every week. In fact, 54% of us say we love eggs and simply couldn’t live without them. And yet, less than half able to correctly boil an egg!

In the great egg debate, boiled eggs left all others quaking in their shells with 27% saying the traditional boiled egg is their favourite. Scrambled eggs scrambled for second place (23%) while fried and poached evenly matched in third spot (16%).

Only 44% of Irish people know the correct amount of time it takes to make the perfect soft-boiled egg (3 minutes), with men (47%) faring better than women (41%) when it comes to getting cracking in the kitchen.

Eggs are a great source of protein, iron and vitamins A, B12 and D. This year everyone is encouraged to get cracking in the kitchen on October 14th to celebrate World Egg Day.

Fill a small saucepan with enough boiling water to cover an egg and place over a medium heat. Carefully lower a large Golden Irish Egg into the boiling water. Start timing!

When cooking a soft-boiled egg, a medium egg will be done in 3 minutes, a large egg in 4 minutes and an extra large in 5 minutes.

If you like them a little more firm, simply boil for another minute. Hard-boiled eggs will be ready after 10 minutes. Practice makes perfect!

Allowing 2 large Golden Irish Eggs per person, break the eggs into a measuring jug, whisk and season to taste. Put some butter into a small non-stick saucepan and melt over a low heat.

Pour in the eggs and start stirring gently with a wooden spoon, using the spoon to take the cooked egg away from the bottom of the saucepan and let the runny egg take its place until it’s cooked to your liking.

Add a splash of cream for pure indulgence!

Make sure your eggs are really fresh. Add a small dash of vinegar to a pan of simmering water. Crack your Golden Irish eggs individually into a small dish or cup.

Stir the water in a circular motion to create a gentle whirlpool in the water, this will help the egg white wrap around the yolk.

Gently tip the egg into the water and leave to cook for three minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain onto kitchen paper- delicious!
