Is burgundy or black the colour of the party season?

Today Show stylist Caroline Downey shares some of her favourite looks and colours to play with for the party season.

Last week on the Today Show, I set myself a delicious dilemma: is burgundy the new black, or are we still wedded to the wardrobe classic?

I led the charge in a beautiful burgundy dress from Carraig Donn. I’m fully embracing the shade this season—even though Maura Derrane and I laughed about how our school uniforms were burgundy and put us off for years! Fashion redemption is sweet.

This dress has that silky drape that just hangs so elegantly, and the clever knot detail at the side creates subtle ruching—perfect for skimming over the tummy while still feeling sleek and pulled together.

It’s the kind of piece that looks like effort but feels like ease.

Maeve shimmered in a deep-burgundy Pala D’oro one-piece that reads like a co-ord—skirt and top in the same fabric—which is a brilliant styling trick if you want the polish of separates with the streamline of a dress. Matching materials elongate the silhouette and minimise fuss, especially if you’re tummy-conscious.

The high neck balances the sparkle, and we were all a little obsessed with the bow at the back—feminine without being fussy.

Lined, comfortable, and party-ready, it’s the perfect "I made an effort" look that still lets you breathe.

For Team Black, Paula wore a long-sleeve velvet top from Rowen Avenue, delicately embellished with black sequins. It looks like a chic evening jacket at first glance, but—surprise—it’s a top. That makes it incredibly versatile and far more comfortable than a structured blazer.

I paired it with satin black trousers for a tonal, textural moment: matte velvet against glossy satin. It’s an elevated alternative to your usual black trousers and cami. We finished with a gold clutch—the forever accessory that instantly warms up black and never dates.

Shin looks festive in a rich burgundy velvet dress from Carraig Donn that will make so many shapes feel fantastic, especially if you’ve a fuller bust or carry weight through the waist. The V-neckline opens the décolletage, a defined waistband creates shape, and the softly pleated skirt floats rather than clings. Bonus points for the elasticated back—ideal for long dinners and even longer dancefloors.

We added gold earrings and a burgundy-almost-ruby necklace from Knight & Day to echo the dress, and the effect was luxe without tipping into "too much". Speaking of accessories, I have to mention the burgundy bag I’m in love with—also available in black for the die-hard minimalists.

Consider it the perfect bridge between both camps.

To finish, a classic black velvet suit—sharp blazer and tailored trousers—is the definition of forever-fashion. It needs little fanfare: the sumptuous texture does the talking, the silhouette flatters, and it works year after year.

For party season, add the festive glitz of a gold-and-black top to lift the look with just the right amount of sparkle. Available from Rowen Avenue.

So, ahead of party season, are you staying loyal to classic black, or can I tempt you to the bold beauty of burgundy? Personally, I’m voting for both. Why choose when the fun is in the mix?

Until next time, dress for yourself and wear it with confidence.
