Jonathan Anderson finally unveiled his vision for Dior this afternoon, as the Northern Irish designer presented his first Dior Homme's Menswear Ready-to-wear collection for the luxury brand in Paris today.
Anderson was appointed creative director fo both menswear and womenswear for the storied French fashion house ealier this summer, having moved from Spanish brand Loewe after 11 extraordinarily successful years. He replaced Maria Grazia Chiuri who stepped down earlier this month after nine years.
His first fashion show for Dior welcomed a host of famous faces, including Sabrina Carpenter, Rihanna and ASAP Rocky, Robert Pattinson and more.
Fashion fans have been eagerly awaiting Anderson's take on the brand, and it did not disappoint.
The collection represented an elevated step forward in Anderson's ethos of blending elements from womenswear and menswear to create a genderless aesthetic, which was here peppered with Old World motifs, nods to the French house's history and avant-garde updates on classics.
Anderson opened the show with a dark green tweed blazer in what appeared to be Donegal tweed, with pronounced hips, paired with white cargo-inspired shorts that featured extended ruffles that brought to mind the panniers worn by courtiers in Versailles.
Silky satin stoles were layered with pyjama-style shirts, sharp blazers and chunky knits, often layered under brightly coloured sweaters that were draped across the models' shoulders, and paired with shorts. Looks also featured a blend of sharp, polished design and undone styling, with many models walking the runway with untied trainers and trousers with one leg rolled up.
Tailoring was front and centre, too, in the sleek single-button grey velvet jacket and a long grey tweed piece with pleats on the chest and shoulders, but was often paired with jeans, creating high contrast for a brand as rooted in luxury as Dior.
Anderson's love of the natural world was present in his floral motifs, but contrasted with shirts and jackets accented with trompe l'oeil military designs.
Most surprisingly, however, was a look that combined a loose pyjama shirt with a stole and navy tracksuit bottoms that seemed to resemble the ones required by schools for PE. If so, this was a delightfully subtle nod to Anderson's upbringing.
Taking his bow at the end of the show, Anderson seemed on the verge of tears as he walked down the centre of the rows of seats, as the crowd gave him an immediate and rapturous standing ovation. A momentous day for the parish!
And if that wasn't enough on the runway, the guest looks also seemed to give a glimpse at what Dior's womenswear will look like when Anderson presents it at Paris Fashion Week in September.
Most notably, Sabrina Carpenter attended the show in a stunning skirt suit that referenced Dior's New Look style, the iconic reimagining of ladies' wear that made Christian Dior a fashion legend. Cinched at the waist and with a full pleated skirt, the grey suit was the right mix of austere and sultry.
Rihanna, meanwhile, attended in a layered and colourful look, pairing a crisp white shirt with a mint green cardigan and a floral embellished coat.
Irish actress Alison Oliver wore a military-inspired jacket with a white shirt, loose jeans and a sunflower yellow handbag.
