The Cannes Film Festival 2025 has kicked off and is set to bring A-listers Paul Mescal, Bono, Jennifer Lawrence and more to the balmy French city. You can see the gallery of best celebrity looks here.

However, there was one hitch in the road in the lead up to the glamorous festival, as organisers announced new changes to the festival dress code.

While long evening dresses, tuxedos, cocktail dresses and pant suits were all permitted, revealing outfits and voluminous dresses with long trains are now banned from the red carpet.

The changes were made for "decency reasons" and to prevent the flow of traffic being disrupted by large dresses, the organisers said, and given the changes were made just days before the stars hit the red carpet, it's unsurprising that at least one A-lister had to make some last-minute tweaks.

Halle Berry wearing Jacquemus

Speaking at a jury press conference on the opening day of the festival, Tuesday 13 May, jury member Halle Berry revealed that she was forced to change her choice of gown, as it would have gone against the new rules.

"I had an amazing dress by [Indian avant-garde designer Gaurav] Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it's too big of a train," Berry said at a jury press conference at the festival. "I'm not going to break the rules. The nudity part is also probably a good rule."

While we may never get to see that gown by the showstopping designer, Berry instead stepped out in a chic and eye-catching black and white gown by French designer Jacquemus. The floor-length gown featured a high neckline, an A-line silhouette, and an open back accented with a cape detail, all in a simple monochromatic stripe pattern.

She wore her hair cropped short and loosely waved, while her makeup was bold and smokey.

Heidi Klum wearing Elie Saab

Although Berry heeded the organiser's wishes about the dress code, there were a number of voluminous dresses spotted on the red carpet. Heidi Klum made a statement in a flowing dusty pink strapless gown by Elie Saab, which featured layers of organza ruffles that were cut to resemble floral petals, a daring thigh-high slit and a long train that flowed behind her.

She added pale pink high-heel sandals and an assortment of shimmering jewels from Lorraine Schwartz.

She finished her look with a soft and glamorous makeup look, pairing a nude lip with a smokey eye and plenty of bronzer. Her blonde hair was styled into loose waves.
