Proving that some things never go out of style, a selection of Princess Diana's gowns are due to go on display in Ireland, just days before the coronation of her ex-husband, King Charles III.

Three of the Princess's iconic gowns will go on display to the public at The Museum of Style Icons at Newbridge Silverware in Co. Kildare, with the exhibition opening on Friday.

The pieces are part of a new exhibition called Princess Diana – Fashion from the Wardrobe of The People's Princess, and will then be moved to Julien’s and TCM’s two-day Legends auction event in Beverly Hills on 26 and 27 August.

The gowns are relatively rare items from the wardrobe of one of the most influential figures in fashion history, as they haven't been seen in public since they were auctioned by Christie's in June 1997, just two months before she passed away.

The gowns offer a glimpse into her style tastes: among them is an ornate red silk gown by Bruce Oldfield, with a ruched bodice and fluted skirt, which Diana wore to the premiere of Hot Shots in London's Leicester Square in 1991.

This striking gown is estimated to be valued between $200,000 - $400,000 (roughly €181,000 - €362,000), according to Julien's.

The other two gowns are by Catherine Walker, an English designer who was a favourite of Diana's and who created pieces for the Princess for 16 years.

One gown is a green and black evening gown that Diana wore to a gala dinner at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto in 1986. It is thought to be valued between $100,0000 - $200,000 (roughly €90,000 - €181,000).

The other is an elegant black and white strapless gown, which was worn by Diana to a private function and is estimated to fetch $60,000 - $80,000 (roughly €54,000 - €72,000) at the auction.
