The TIME Women of the Year Gala took place this week, bringing together a host of influential women from a mix of backgrounds and professions.

The second annual event was a glamorous one, held to honour a range of women who have made deep impacts in their work and are working toward climate justice, equal pay, and better representation onscreen.

Speaking at the event, Cate Blanchett – who is nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Tár – reflected on the relationship women have with control, and letting go of it.

"As one gets older you feel less in control. As women, we often feel like we do need to be in control of everything. Often need to be in control of things individually," she said. "What has really rung home for me tonight is the only way forward is to try and let go of control."

She dedicated her toast to "not only the women in this room right now but to the millions and millions of women who should be standing at this mic, who should be in this room".

Also delivering a speech on the night was Megan Rapinoe, an American professional soccer player, who dedicated her speech to the transgender community.

Angela Bassett.

Of course, the stars dressed to impress at the event, too, with Blanchett continuing her fashion streak of elegantly tailored outfits by wearing an exaggerated hourglass tuxedo with cropped sleeves by Alexandre Vauthier.

Angela Bassett walked the red carpet in a flirty and feminine lilac jumpsuit with feathered cuffs and a lime green sash around the waist. Brooke Shields also opted for colour in a hot pink jumpsuit and matching blazer.
