Zendaya, Anglea Bassett, Kerry Washington, and Janelle Monáe were just some of the big names in attendance at the 54th NAACP Image Awards at Pasadena Civic Auditorium last night.

The annual awards ceremony celebrates the outstanding achievements of people of color in television, music, literature, and film as well as honouring those who promote social justice through creative endeavors.

Emancipation actor Will Smith (Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture), newly-minted EGOT Viola Davis (Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture), and Black Panther star Angela Bassett (Entertainer of the Year) were among those honored at this year's ceremony.

Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson accepted the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, while P-Valley won Outstanding Drama Series.

Hosted by Queen Latifah, this year's show saw a number of special awards handed out to honour those working in activism and advocacy.

The Jackie Robinson Sports Award went to 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams for her "record-breaking wins on the tennis court" as well as her business acumen and philanthropic endeavors.

The President's Award went to Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade whose daughter, Zaya, came out as trans in 2020.

Speaking directly to his daughter while accepting the awards, Dwayne said: "Zaya, you've made me a better human just simply by being who you were born to be... Thank you for showing the world what courage looks like."

The red carpet was a colorful affair with Euphoria star Zendaya dazzling in black and green Atelier Versace, singer Janelle Monáe sizzling in a custom red dress from Cong Tri, and Abbott Elementary star Sheryl Lee Ralph looking glam in a Pistis Ghana gown.
