Arguably the biggest date on the fashion calendar, the Met Gala is an annual extravaganza that sees the world's most famous faces dare to display their most extravagant looks under the watchful eye of event chair Anna Wintour.

While Irish stars such as Nicola Coughlan, Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley made their presence known on the iconic steps this year, dazzling in an array of extravagant and daring looks, one Irish designer also managed to make his mark.

Stepping into her rightful place on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker stunned in a gown from American designer Christopher John Rogers, and a unique headpiece from Irish haute couture milliner Philip Treacy.

Hailing from Galway, Treacy first studied design at Dublin's National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in the late 80s before moving to London to complete an MA in Fashion Design at the Royal College of Art in London.

From there, Treacy's career went from strength to strength, with his acclaimed graduate show resulting in offers to collaborate with international designers including Valentino and Versace.

Since then, his creations have been worn on red carpets around the world by an impressive collection of celebrities ranging from Lady Gaga and Elle Fanning to members of the British royal family and, of course, SJP.

Inspired by an 1860s ensemble by Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley - a prominent designer, seamstress, author, philanthropist and social activist active during the Gilded Age - Parker's gown consisted of a contoured, patch-worked bodice and pleated ball skirt in shades of black, charcoal, elephant and Ivory silk faille and silk moiré with Swarovski crystal buttons and silk moiré bows.

The unique headpiece introduced a welcome burst of colour with its deep pink petals and black and white plumes, complementing the eye-catching look perfectly.
