Irish stars made their presence known on the Met Gala steps this year, dazzling in an array of extravagant and daring looks – and that's just Paul Mescal's moustache.

Arguably the biggest date on the fashion calendar, the Met Gala is an annual extravaganza that sees the world's most famous faces dare to display their most extravagant looks under the watchful eye of event chair Anna Wintour.

According to Vogue, organisers asked attendees to "embody the grandeur—and perhaps the dichotomy—of Gilded Age New York".

Irish stars embraced the theme with aplomb, wowing in everything from opulent gowns to avant garde suits.

Leading the pack was Nicola Coughlan, the Derry Girls star who has become a darling of the fashion world since bursting onto our screens.

Coughlan continued her streak of stunning red carpet appearances in a romantic and feminine black and pink gown by Richard Quinn. Coughlan wore a baby pink gown with voluminous puff sleeves and form-fitting bodice, with a black taffeta cape slung off her shoulders. Adding to the drama, the gown was festooned with baby pink and black feathers.

She wore her hair styled into a sleek up-turned bob that bounced on her shoulders, while her makeup was kept tonal and pink, with a shimmery pink eyeshadow and smoked-out black eyeliner helping her eyes pop.

Contrasting this was Jessie Buckley's truly experimental look, a dazzling black and white pinstripe suit by Schiaparelli. Featuring wide-legged trousers, a fitted blazer with sharp lapels, matching vest and black and white striped tie, Buckley looked every inch the boundary-pushing fashion star.

She paired this look with a wide-brimmed black hat, that contrasted her bleach blonde hair, and added a faux pencil-thin moustache to complete the look.

Speaking of moustaches, it wasn't the only one drawing the eye, as our own Paul Mescal debuted a fierce moustache of his own.

Walking the red carpet with girlfriend Phoebe Bridgers, Paul wore an all-black look by Valentino, pairing a longline blazer with black trousers and a matching black shirt.

Editor-in-chief of Glamour Samantha Barry dazzled at the Instagram after party, wearing a vintage black lace gown by Zac Posen. Featuring long lace sleeves with cut-outs below the shoulders, ruffled shoulders, a V-neck and a cinched waist, it was perfectly on theme and extravagant.

She wore her hair styled into set waves, while her makeup was fresh and glowy, with a bold red lip and subtle contour.
