After almost two years of life away from the royal family, Meghan Markle has made a triumphant return to the red carpet in a breathtaking scarlet gown.

The Duchess of Sussex and her husband Prince Harry made a surprise appearance at the Salute to Freedom Gala in New York City. It's been a long time since the could got dressed to the nines for an event, as their schedules have shifted from glamorous state engagements with the royal family, to high-profile business meetings and conferences.

However, as she proved last night, Meghan still knows how to turn on the star power when she needs it.

The couple were in the bustling city to attend the gala, which was held in the Intrepid Museum and honours military veterans for their service. The ceremony was attended by other stars such as Jon Bon Jovi.

For the occasion, Meghan wore a stunning red taffeta gown by Carolina Herrera, featuring a plunging v-neck neckline, thin straps, a fitted bodice and a voluminous skirt that flowed behind her as she walked. It was the perfect look for the Duchess, a modern take on Old Hollywood glamour, and heralded her return to the red carpet perfectly.

She paired the gown with satin stiletto heels by firm favourite Giuseppe Zanotti, in a rich deep red shade that complemented the scarlet gown. Keeping accessories minimal but with high impact, she added diamond earrings, her Cartier bangle and an understated diamond bracelet for some sparkle.

To ensure her dress did the talking, Meghan wore her hair slicked back into a high, sleek top knot, while her makeup was bronzed and glowy, with a rich smokey, feline eye, nude lip and a swirl of rosy blush.

Both she and Harry wore red poppy flower pins as a nod to the U.K.'s own Remembrance Day on November 11.
