While we're still hanging on to any last gasps of summer, and all opportunities to wear our summer dresses, we can't deny we're looking forward to autumn and all the cosy outfits that comes with it.

Nailing the switch from summer style into autumn can be tricky, especially if you're someone who likes to borrow from trends, but when it comes to transitional dressing Kate Middleton is a pro.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore an elegant two-tone look for a visit to the RAF yesterday, nailing early autumn glamour with her mix of understated basics.

The Duchess carried out a solo engagement to RAF Brize Norton, an airbase northwest of London, where she heard about the humanitarian work done to evacuate thousands of people from Afghanistan in recent weeks.

A post on the Duke and Duchess's Instagram page read: "It was a honour to hear the stories of some of those involved in #OperationPitting — which were inspiring, emotional, harrowing and powerful — from an incredible group of people.

"Flying out in excess of 15,000 people from Kabul was a truly collaborative operation across our Armed Services, local authorities and aid organisations in Afghanistan and the UK. You should all be proud of your work, often around the clock, to support the evacuation of civilians from Afghanistan."

Kate chose a sophisticated outfit for the occasion, and brought back the colour-blocking trend but this time in pared back neutrals.

She stepped out in a muted cream tailored blazer, the Larsson style by high street brand Reiss, featuring an elegant double-breasted design, peaked lapels and tortoiseshell buttons. She paired this with a cream blouse, the'Binky Blouse' by Goat fashion, which features a high boat neckline and blouson sleeves.

She wore this with a pair of straight-legged navy trousers by UFO, which were cinched at her waist with a navy leather belt.

She added a small cream leather handbag to her look, the Mini Holly style by British brand Tusting, which is a 1950s-inspired piece featuring a rounded base and gold accents. She completed her two-tone outfit with her Emmy London Josie pumps in navy suede, and her Gold Disc Circle earrings by All the Falling Stars.
