It looks like an eye for striking wedding dresses runs in the family, as Kitty Spencer – Princess Diana's niece – tied the knot in one of the most jaw-dropping gowns we've seen in a while.

Spencer, a model and daughter of Charles Spencer, wore a grand total of five breathtaking gowns during her secret wedding to Michael Lewis, a 61-year-old billionaire and chairman of fashion company Foschini Group.

The couple married in an opulent ceremony in Villa Aldobrandini, attended by the likes of Pixie Lott, Ellie Goulding and Made in Chelsea star Mark Francis Vandelli. Kitty dazzled in a Victorian-inspired lace gown.

But it wasn't just any old gown. It wasn't even couture, the more expensive, one-off creations that fashion houses labour over for weeks. It was "alta moda", Dolce & Gabbana's own version of haute couture which can cost up to hundreds of thousands per piece.

The luxury fashion house started presenting these swoon-worthy collections in 2012, and every July over 1,000 extremely wealthy buyers flock to view them in spectacular locations around Italy, from Lake Como to the ancient ruins of Sicily.

Each piece – often featuring some of the most intricate and opulent designs seen in fashion – is handmade and requires multiple fittings, which can rack up a price tag into the hundreds of thousands. They're usually specially made for events, such as the wedding of a certain cultural icon's niece...

Kitty's gown took roughly six months and four fittings to create, according to Tatler. It featured a structured lace bodice with exposed corsetry, puffed shoulders, long lace sleeves, a high neck accented with buttons down to the waist and a full skirt, all made with the same romantic floral-patterned lace. The finishing touch was the dramatic cathedral-length veil, accented with more lace, which completed her fairytale ensemble.

Her hair and makeup were kept comparatively simple to let the gown do the talking, with her blonde tresses swept back into a sleek up-do, and her makeup kept tonal in shades of pink and nude.

And that wasn't all, as the aristocrat had four other dresses to cycle through during her big day, including illusion baby-blue tulle gown and cape embroidered with cross-stitched flowers, which she wore the night before her wedding.

After the ceremony, Kitty swapped her gown for a hand-painted silk gown embellished with flowers and crystals. As the night progressed, she changed into another Dolce & Gabbana design, this time a cocktail dress embroidered with silver and golden beads. Finally, she wore a Mikado silk dress with cutwork inserts, embellished with tiny sequins, porcelain-like appliqué flowers and double duchesse ribbons.

It helps that Kitty is a global ambassador for the brand, and has walked for Dolce & Gabbana as a fashion model, both in their Christmas runway show at Harrods and in 2018 in Milan. She's also featured on the cover of Vogue Japan, and is the face of high end jewellery brand BVLGARI.
