The BET Awards took place last night, marking 20 years of celebrating black excellence in music, acting and other forms of entertainment, and the stars made sure it was a year to remember.

Established in 2001, the BET Awards is always a highlight of the entertainment industry's calendar, with some of the biggest names in music, film and sport strutting their stuff down the red carpet.

The theme of last night's show was the "Year of the Black Women", with host Taraji P. Henson leading the ceremony from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles in front of a live audience of vaccinated spectators – the show's first since the start of the pandemic.

Kicking off the show, Henson said: "Celebrating Black women isn't a fad or a trend, it's a forever mood. There is more than enough room for all of us to thrive, because can't nobody be like me and can't nobody be you like you."

Over the course of the night, Henson dressed up as some of her "all-time favorite women", including singer H.E.R, Erykah Badu and Tina Turner.

She added: "Tonight we're also reclaiming our aesthetics, baby hairs, long blinged-out nails, yeah, we taking all that back, gold hoops, bamboo earrings. … Our Black men, we want all y’all back, because we love you, we see you, kings, and most importantly, we need you."

It was a headline-grabbing event, not only because A-List rapper Cardi B announced her second pregnancy at the live event. Iconic actress and singer Queen Latifah also picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award, and a slew of rappers honoured her legacy with a medley of her best-known hits.

Megan Thee Stallion scooped no less than four awards, going home with "Best Female Hip Hop Artist," "Best Collaboration," "Viewer's Choice" and "Video of the Year" and was tied with rapper DaBaby for the most nominations.

Chadwick Boseman was named as Best Actor for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, while Andra Day nabbed the award for Best Actress for The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
