As she prepares to welcome her second child – a girl – later this year, Meghan Markle has mostly stayed out of the spotlight.
While her husband Prince Harry has been active at conferences, we've not seen much of Meghan, although the Duchess of Sussex made a surprise appearance over the weekend. Meghan spoke out about gender equity and how Covid-19 disproportionately affects women via a video message to the Global Citizen: Vax Live event.
Prince Harry had attended the event at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, but it was Meghan's message that really stood out. "We've gathered tonight because the road ahead is getting brighter", she said. "But it’s going to take every one of us to find our way forward.
"Women, and especially women of colour, have seen a generation of economic gain wiped out. Since the pandemic began, nearly 5.5million women have lost work in the US, and 47million more women around the world are expected to slip into extreme poverty."— Omid Scobie (@scobie) May 9, 2021

"With the surge in gender-based violence, the increased responsibility of unpaid care work, and new obstacles that have reversed so much progress for women in the workplace, we're at an inflection point for gender equity."
She also referenced the couple's daughter, who will arrive later this year, saying: "My husband and I are thrilled to soon be welcoming a daughter. It's a feeling of joy we share with millions of other families around the world.
"When we think of her, we think of all the other families around the globe who must be given the ability and support to lead us forward. Their future leadership depends on the decisions we make and the actions we take now to set them up and to set all of us up for a successful, equitable, and compassionate tomorrow."
While a working member of the royal family, Meghan nailed the delicate art of sending messages through her outfits, and it looks like she worked her magic in her video appearance, too.

Markle dazzled in a bold red and pink Carolina Herrera shirt dress, featuring a button-up front, voluminous silhouette, collared neckline and striking pattern of pink poppies that really complemented her complexion. But it was her jewellery that really caught our eye.
The activist chose the Woman Power Charm Necklace from Awe Inspired jewellery, a stunning piece that combines the Venus symbol with a protesting fist, in 14k yellow gold vermeil and studded with a purple amethyst. The necklace costs €116.95 and 20% of each purchase goes towards women in need.
Meghan also added a sentimental accessory by wearing Princess Diana's Cartier Tank Watch, one of the late Princess's favourite pieces of jewellery. As Meghan has spoken before of buying Cartier pieces to pass onto her daughter, it was a touching nod to mothers and women across the world.
Meghan finished her look with a pair of gold drop earrings and her Cartier Love watch and bracelet. She styled her long hair in voluminous waves that trailed over her shoulder, while a pink glossy lip and smokey eye completed her look.
