Running since 1929, the Oscars are one of the most star-studded and prestigious events on the Hollywood calendar.

Typically held in February, this year's awards ceremony was pushed back by two months due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic. Coverage of the show will air in America on Sunday at 8pm E.T. but Irish viewers can watch it back on RTÉ2 on Monday at 9:35pm.

Another change to this year's Academy Awards will be the location. As well as being held in the usual venue of the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Union Station - a famed Los Angeles landmark - will be involved in the show.

Interestingly, this won't be the first time the awards have been held in two locations as they were previously held as a bicoastal event for some time in the 1950s.

The presenters
In 2018 producers were left scrambling to find a host for the Oscars when comedian Kevin Hart publicly stepped down from the role following the resurfacing of some controversial tweets.

In the end, their solution was to appoint a number of high-profile celebrities to fill various roles throughout the night - a trend that that has continued ever since.

This year's hosts include high-profile names including Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Zendaya, Viola Davis, Riz Ahmed, Regina King, Reese Witherspoon and Renée Zellwegger.

The Nominees
This year's nominees are truly an outstanding group of actors. From Riz Ahmed in Sound of Metal to Viola Davis in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, these performances had 'Oscar nomination' written all over them from the moment they hit screens.

Netflix's Mank has an incredible 10 nominations, including Best Director for David Fincher, Best Actor for Gary Oldman, and Best Supporting Actress for Amanda Seyfried.

For the first time, two women have been nominated for Best Director: Chloé Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman. They will be up against Thomas Vinterberg for Another Round, David Fincher for Mank, and Lee Isaac Chung for Minari.

The Red Carpet
The Oscars are the perfect way to wave off awards season, and the red carpet is always a feast for the eyes as celebs dare to be different. The designs are haute couture, the stylists are the best in the business, and the stars have some of the most beautiful faces in the world - it's a fashion fan's dream.

Of course, despite best efforts to stand out, certain trends will inevitably emerge. So far, awards season has delivered stand out menswear and stunning gowns: the SAGs featured a series of well cut suits, the Golden Globes were all about sparkles and sequins, the BAFTAs delivered eye-catching metallics, and the Grammy's highlighted the power of a feather boa.

We can't wait to see what the Oscars' red carpet delivers...
