It's safe to say it's been a great year for Paul Mescal.

While some of us are barely changing out of our pyjamas for work during the day, the Irish actor is yoyoing from one high profile gig to another, and all the while turning the humble GAA short into the hottest fashion item of the year.

And it looks like rocking a little pair of athletic shorts on the regular has become of one the things the young actor is best known for, if his latest photoshoot is anything to go by.

The Normal People star has truly reached the pinnacle of Irish heartthrob, as typified by one very Irish and very opulent look in his latest magazine shoot: the GAA short.

As a former GAA player himself, and having played the sport in his role as Connell in the BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel Normal People, it's a look Mescal is truly comfortable in.

Indeed, during summer – when "Mescalmania", as some publications have called it, was at a fever pitch – photos of the Kildare native wearing GAA shorts and a colourful Adidas jacket while out to the shops for a few tins of pink gin and a packet of prawn cocktail crisps set Twitter aflame

And just as we can't quit Paul Mescal, Paul Mescal can't quit giving us what we want.

Doing as much good work for the GAA short as for quiet, sensitive Irish lads everywhere, Mescal donned a pair of Kildare GAA shorts by O'Neills in a photoshoot for GQ magazine. The 'Vintage Shorts" cost €25 and are a simple white design, with white lines to the side and the Kildare GAA logo.

We've all seen Mescal in GAA shorts by now so this isn't surprising. What has given fans a bit of a shock was the other part of his outfit: a fleece costing over €10,000.

The soft brown fleece – here called a "pullover" – featuring contrasting black and white stripes is by Hermès and costs an eye-watering $9,950. The entire outfit is a bougie tribute to Mescal's heartthrob image, complete with a silver chain – here by The Vintage Showroom – and Adidas trainers.

It didn't take long for Irish people to freak out over this.

Irish Celebs Doing Things, the Instagram account seemingly devoted to keeping Irish celebrities humble by gently taking the piss, was among the first to sound the alar, sharing a screenshot of the photo with the caption: "Just Paul Mescal wearing a ten grand fleece (!!!) and a pair of Kildare GAA shorts in GQ."

James Kavanagh replied: "Love designer as much as the next b**** but TEN GRAND FOR A FLEECE."

Forgetting the $10,000 fleece for a second, all we can say is at least the most-wanted fashion item of the year costs about the same as a Chinese takeaway, which is exactly what we're planning to get when we don our GAA shorts.
