Considering the fashion industry often has a reputation for being snooty and unsmiling, it’s surprising how often designers make us laugh with their quirky clothes and absurd accessories. Plus, the price tags of these items – which we hope are created with at least a little irony – are always comically high as well.
As Gucci unveils a strange denim design, here are five of the most bizarre luxury fashion buys of recent years…
1. Gucci grass-stained dungarees

The latest item of clothing that’s got the internet scratching its collective head? That would be these men’s dungarees from Gucci that take the distressed denim trend to another level, with what looks like grass stains down the legs. The €680 Eco Washed Organic Denim Overalls are said to "blur the line between vintage and contemporary", but some would argue they blur the line between dirty and clean.
2. Balenciaga Crocs

When it comes to bizarre fashion items, no one does it better than Balenciaga. The French fashion house is constantly coming up with new ways to delight – or in some cases, disgust – shoppers. Take the brand’s Crocs collaboration, which resulted in huge platform-soled versions of the already divisive plastic clogs, on sale for £645 (approx. €702). Some people were horrified, others couldn’t wait to get their hands on a pair.
3. Moschino dry cleaning bag dress
Regular trips to the dry cleaners are essential for any designer obsessed fashionista, but aren’t you supposed to take the clear plastic bag off before you put your freshly laundered garments back on? Evidently not, in the case of this Moschino autumn/winter 2017 see-through gown, which was sold by Browns for £560, described as a ‘cape sheer overlay dress’.
4. Jil Sander paper bag
German designer Jil Sander took an American supermarket staple and turned it into a must-have accessory in 2012 with the creation of a brown paper bag emblazoned with her logo. Retailing at $290, the Vasari bag sold out everywhere after being seen on the menswear catwalk.
5. Balenciaga Ikea bag
As anyone who’s ever moved house or had to lug a load of donations to a charity shop can attest, those big blue Ikea bags are extremely useful. So is it any wonder Balenciaga chose to pay homage to the iconic cobalt tote? The brand’s Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag was a dead ringer for the Ikea classic, but the Balenciaga version was made from glazed leather and instead of costing 50p, cost $2,145.
